As a host of Bay Area Dance Week, Sama Sama Cooperative invites the greater San Francisco Bay Area to dance with them at ‘Sayawan,’ their annual Dance-a-thon celebration. This free event is Sama Sama Cooperative’s primary fundraiser to support its unique program – a cooperative lead summer day camp centering Filipino American cultural and ecological heritage with Tagalog immersion.
‘Sayawan’ will be held on Sunday, April 30, from 2-6 PM at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church, 1330 Lakeshore Ave. in Oakland. As a host event of Bay Area Dance Week, an annual 10 day dance fest from April 21-30, Sama Sama Cooperative joins the Bay Area’s dynamic and culturally rich dance community celebration.
Event guests will be treated to a wide range of instructor led dance sessions as well as the Cooperative’s resident DJ, beatsnrice. Dance sessions include indigenous Philippine folkdance, Hip Hop, Salsa, Rumba, Tahitian, and Modern. Children are especially encouraged to participate and will be able to earn prizes throughout the afternoon.
In addition to the dance festivities, guests may browse selections of the Cooperative’s sari-sari store, stocked with Filipino treats and locally and Philippine made crafts. Filipino refreshments will be available for purchase and will include traditional and vegetarian selections.
To save your spot at ‘Sayawan,’ please sign up at www.bayareadance.org. The Cooperative requests all participants wear clothing that one can easily move in. Though limited and accessible parking is available, BART’s Lake Merritt Station in Oakland is a five minute walk from the event.
Sama Sama Cooperative’s camp theme this summer is “Air and Liberation.” It will be held at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church and runs for four weeks, from June 26 through July 21.
