On Monday June 26, Sama Sama kicked-off the 2017 Summer Camp, “Air and Liberation” | “Himpapawid at Kalayaan.” The theme for the week was Spirits or Kaluluwa and the campers engaged in activities including altar-building, creating community agreements, and kite-making. With Filipino language interwoven throughout, campers explored the natural environment around Lake Merritt, San Pablo Park, Spiral Gardens, China Camp, Sibley Volcanic Reserve, and Lake Anza.
HIMPAPAWID AT KALAYAAN
Campers made saranggola (kites) and flew them at China Camp.
HEALING THE LAND: SIBLEY VOCANIC RESERVE
Campers hiked to this special labyrinth in the Oakland hills, learning a little more about the history of the land where they live.
BERKELEY SPIRAL GARDENS
Sama Sama campers will be visiting Berkeley’s Spiral Gardens one day a week. The whole day is spent outdoors cooking, playing, and learning!
